First Paired Living Liver Transplant Exchange in North America at Toronto General Hospital

April 29, 2019

In July of 2018 Dr. David Grant and the Transplant team at Toronto General Hospital took part in the first ever living liver transplant exchange: living donor, Kelly Bryan, generously donated more than half her liver to Muhammad Khan, whose wife Hina, in turn, donated more than half of her liver to another stranger, thereby saving two lives.

The ‘exchange’ took 12 hours and involved multiple procedures, four operating rooms, and 28 staff and surgeons.

All four patients are now doing well.
